Featured new PDC approved pole dance school Vertica Dance Fitness Centre, Sydney.
The PDC are proud to welcome their latest approved pole dance school, Vertica Dance to the Pole Dance Community. We spoke to Vertica Dance owner Kim Miller about her school and her passion for pole dancing.
What first got you into pole dancing?
I am a trained classical ballet dancer; I have worked around the world performing in many shows such as the “Lido De Paris”. Whilst in Europe I started learning aerial work, as my ex-boyfriend was from the circus. When I returned to Australia, there wasn’t any aerial school at that time, so I found a pole dancing studio. Since the moves where very similar I took to it immediately.

What are your favourite pole moves?
Anything move that has a split in it, as that is my forte` with my dance background.
Do you prefer spinning or static pole?
When I started I would only use a static pole, as I would always spin out of control. This was because as a ballet dancer I was a fast turner and on the pole you are not able to spot. I now mostly use spinning poles as it gives move’s a nicer flow.
Do you use 38mm, 45mm or 50mm poles?
My studio has 38mm and 45mm poles.

What sort of poles do you use?
At my studio we have permanent brass poles installed, I also use 45mm X-Poles for performances.
Do you have a favourite grip aid?
I have tried most grip aids, at the moment I do like “Dry Hands”. It does change depending on the weather, type of pole etc.
What is your pole dancing nemesis?
Probably when I have to grip with my upper inside thighs, especially on 38mm poles. As my thighs don’t meet together and it takes a lot more effort to hold moves such as crescent moon (nike) & hangbacks (fall-backs)with straight legs.
What sort of students have you worked with?
I have a range of pole dancing student from 16yrs to 70yrs old. There students come all walks of life such as TV personalities, Nurses, Journalists, Accountants, Real Estate agents, Surfers, Mothers, Grand Mothers and School students just to name a few. I have special class for the more mature age ladies, as they feel more comfortable dancing with ladies around there same age. I find a great joy watching the students find there confidents and able to trust themselves to be able to hang upside down in whatever move.
What do you do aside from pole dancing?
I have my own Dance Production Company, “Kimstar Entertainment”, so that keeps me busy with producing shows for corporate event in Australia and as well as the overseas market. I also teach other forms of dance and exercise classes here in Sydney.
Have you ever had any injuries from pole dancing?
I have always been injury free all my dance life until last year before Miss Pole Dance Australia. I hurt my right shoulder; they say I have a bursitis impingement. I think it was from overusing it while building my studio and preparing for MPDA.
